How to Care for a String of Pearls Plant

 String of Pearls Plant

If you're anything like me and have a difficult time caring for most plants, or don't have the time and/or resources, I would recommend taking on the String of Pearls plant. This one is not very hard to take care of and can grow quite a bit in a short period of time. Lets get into some of the tips for having your very own!

Plant Description

  • Size: 1-2 feet tall, 1-2 feet long
  • Sun exposure: full, partial
  • Origin: Africa
  • Bloom season: Summer
  • Soil: sandy, well-drained
Plant Care

One of the best ways to help this plant grow is by starting off with a few strands in a hanging basket. I love the way this one looks, it drapes down beautifully in different lengths all around the pot of your choosing, or you can redirect the strands to one side of the pot to hang from a shelf or a ledge.

Another important thing to know is that this particular plant needs constant light all year round. String of pearl plants need to be switched off between direct and indirect sunlight, roughly for six to eight hours a day.

As far as soil goes, you can use soil for any kind of succulent plant but using sandy soil will produce the best results. String of Pearl plants are more likely to get root rot, so it's essential to place it in a well-draining pot to avoid this from happening; Clay pots can help with this.
*Root Rot is a plant disease that is caused by waterlogged soil or different kinds of fungi.

The soil doesn't need to be watered crazy here, but it does need to be slightly moist. This is only required in the Spring and Summer (when it's the blooming season) but after this time period passes, it's okay to reduce the amount of watering. You can water these plants just one time every week or every other week, although, if your String of Pearls is in warmer weather then this might be weekly. You can usually tell when your plant needs to be watered if the top half inch of soil is dry.

In the Spring and Fall seasons, it's best to keep your plant in an area where it's roughly 70 degrees or higher. In the Winter it can be placed in an area of 50 to 60 degrees. Try not to place this one in a place with a lot of humidity, so if you were hoping to put it in your bathroom or kitchen perhaps a fake plant will be sufficient for decoration.

During the bloom season, it would be best to give your plant some new water-soluble fertilizer every other week to keep it nice and healthy. When it's not bloom season, do this every 6 weeks.

So you've grown a string of pearls plant. Now what? Trim the dead strands to keep this plant flourishing!

Wrapping it up

These plants are absolutely beautiful, easy to care for, and make the perfect addition to your collection whether it be in or outside of your home.
